    Westwood Police step up patrols, roadblocks after report of attempted luring

    Local police are stepping up roadblocks and patrols Friday morning as they continue to investigate an attempted luring.

    On Lafayette Avenue, police officers were asking questions and distributing flyers to drivers and pedestrians to help generate leads, Police Chief Frank Regino said.

    “So far we have nothing, but we have officers patrolling the area around the school today and we will see how things proceed,” he said.

    Police in Hawthorne, Maywood, Fair Lawn, Oradell,Ridgewood, Washington Township and Hackensackare investigating luring cases. A state police sketch of the Westwood suspect bears a striking resemblance to the suspect from Washington Township, authorities said.

    The Westwood incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday. A junior high school student was walking alone to school on Lafayette Avenue when a gray four-door hatchback pulled up alongside her, police said. Read the rest of this entry »

    Westwood Police investigating possible luring

    Police are investigating a possible luring incident that took place Thursday morning, the latest in a string of reports involving men accosting children on Bergen County streets.

    State police have prepared a composite sketch of the suspect, which was released Thursday afternoon. 

    At around 7:10 a.m. Thursday, a 13-year-old junior high school student was walking alone to school on Lafayette Avenue, when a gray four-door hatchback pulled up alongside her, police said.

    The driver tried to engage the girl in conversation, Police Captain Frank Durante said.

    The driver, described as a white middle-age male with a crew cut and receding hairline, asked the girl if she wanted a ride to or from school, Durante said.

    The student continued to school, where she reported the incident to administrators, who called the police. Read the rest of this entry »

    Westwood Police charge Rockland man with breaking into apartment

    A man who allegedly broke down the door of a female friend’s apartment Thursday morning and then fled in his car was caught less than a half-hour later by police in Ramapo, N.Y., officials said.

    Robert Driscoll, 49, of Spring Valley, N.Y. was charged with burglary, criminal mischief and simple assault after having what police described as an altercation with the woman.

    Driscoll knew the woman and may have had a dating relationship with her, said Chief Frank Regino of the Westwood police. Regino said Driscoll broke into the apartment, on Westwood Avenue, at 10:35 a.m. and fled in a Lincoln Town Car that was registered in his name. He was arrested at 11:02 a.m. after an alert was broadcast to other police departments that included a description of Driscoll and the car he was driving, Regino said. Read the rest of this entry »
