    Driver in crash at Westwood Trader Joe’s cited for careless driving

    The borough police department issued careless-driving charges against the driver who struck a pedestrian in a store’s parking lot a day earlier, officials said on Thursday.

    The driver, Maryann Lewis, 75, of New Milford, was backing out of a handicapped parking spot in front of the Trader Joe’s grocery store on Irvington Street when her sedan apparently accelerated and lurched forward, striking an employee who had just finished her shift at the store.     Woman severely injured after car accident at Trader Joe’s in Westwood

    A driver hit the front of a grocery store late Wednesday afternoon, severely injuring a female employee who had just finished her shift, police said.

    Around 3 p.m., a woman who appeared to be elderly had backed out of a handicapped spot in front of the borough’s Trader Joe’s on Irvington Street. The car, a sedan, apparently accelerated and lurched forward, striking a female employee who had ended her work day and was grabbing a shopping cart outside the store, Police Chief Frank Regino said.

    The female employee “sustained some very severe injuries” and was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, Regino said. He said he did not know the extent of her injuries or current condition, but last was made aware that she was in surgery. Read the rest of this entry »
