A three-car accident along Kinderkamack Road sent one driver to the hospital and another to a jail cell.

Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino said that a young woman — identified as Nicole Italiano, 25, of Northvale — was arrested at the scene of the crash on the 400 block of Kinderkamack Road.

Italiano was charged with driving while impaired, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, Regino said. Police said they found a crack pipe in her possession at the time of her arrest.

The afternoon crash involved a borough parking authority vehicle, Regino said. The driver of the parking authority vehicle — whose name was withheld — was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center.

Regino said witnesses reported seeing Italiano’s car traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Kinderkamack Road. She drove into the southbound lane to pass another vehicle, and struck the borough vehicle, which was making a left turn, he said.

Italiano’s car veered across the lane, onto the southbound curb, downed several street signs, struck retaining walls, and traveled across several residential lawns before striking a third car, Regino said.

The driver of the third car sustained no injuries, and had driven into a residential driveway to avoid the crash.

Italiano’s car came to a halt when it collided with the third car, Regino said.

Authorities from Hillsdale, Woodcliff Lake and Emerson were called in to assist at the scene.
